Chapter 22 - The Druxmans

Previous chapter    Next chapter

The Nate Druxman family moved in next to Murrays. They had four boys, Bob, Bud, Ed, and Cal. Mr. Druxman (Nate) worked for Schwabacher Hardware and moonlighted, promoting prizefights. I remember the company car that he drove, a black Dodge roadster, with a silent starter and Schwabacher Hardware painted on the doors. I've always wondered why the silent starter was discontinued? Druxman became quite successful at promoting fights and after several years was able to build a lovely home at 2158 East Shelby Street on the Lake Washington ship canal. Mrs. Druxman was very active during World War II, in charge of making up “care” packages for the over-seas soldiers. I last saw the Druxmans in the late 30's when they had a real estate office on 24th Avenue, close to where the local tavern is now.

As a youngster I was not allowed to play with the Druxman boys. I always thought that was because they were Jewish, but found out many years later (through my sister) that the real reason was because I had done something that incurred the wrath of Druxman and he had threatened to take me to court to be placed in a juvenile home. My sister says my father prevailed upon him to drop the charges, if I was kept from playing with his children. No one remembers what it was that I did to cause Druxman to get so angry with me, but it had something to do with a BB gun.
