Cafe Lago: Building A School Garden Shed, One Pizza At A Time

January 7, 2015 by LeAna Alvarado-Smith 8 Comments

Montlake Elementary School

After hearing the Montlake Elementary School Garden Program was in need of a new garden shed, Carla Leonardi, owner of Cafe Lago, had this to share, “Because we are trying to reach the community more and more each year, we feel that the school garden is a perfect place to start. We are going to be working with the students at the restaurant and the garden. So naturally, their need for a tool shed is something we love to help make happen. Also, a benefit at the restaurant will help the community come together for a common good. We love sheds!”

Proposed Shed Design

Proposed Shed Design

Montlake Elementary School has created a thriving greenhouse and garden program.  Now in its 14th year, all students, “Urban Famers,” at Montlake participate weekly and focus on cooking, nutrition and the arts. But this success comes with challenges, Cheri Bloom, garden program coordinator shared “as the program has become more established, we have outgrown our greenhouse space.” The addition of a storage unit would enable the school to create more space for students in the greenhouse, especially for classroom time and also for projects when weather does not permit us to be outdoors.

With the assistance of Cheri Bloom, Montlake Elementary PTA and Montlake Community Club members, Carla has organized a benefit Pizza Party.  Café Lago is donating all food, beverages and labor for the delicious and family friendly event which provides for 100% of ticket sales going to the garden program shed fund.  Neighbors and Community members are invited to join this wonderful event. To provide a comfortable experience for those attending, two seating times are available – 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm or 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm. Tickets are available online by clicking HERE.

Gateway Parks Fall Planting & Weeding Party

October 15, 2012 by Patricia Shannon-Garvey Leave a Comment

Gateway Parks Fall Planting & Weeding Party

Sunday, October 28, 2012

9:30 to noon

Dear Neighbors,

This year, thanks to your hard work in past years, Gateway Parks were maintained by 3 community work parties and individual weeding and watering attention by myself during the summer months.  People stroll through the parks regularly, and read the Kiosk map for walking information.  Montlake Community Club, in its 2013 -2014 budget, approved mulch delivery and distribution, and plant purchases for the parks.  The parks will be the recipient of Prep’s Earth Days spring cleanup next year, and will be on the 2014 MCC garden tour.

Please join me for a fall work party, a couple of hours of planting crocus bulbs and weeding.  This will bring bright color to our parks in the spring and prepare the grounds for winter.  Bring a shovel, weeders, and gloves.  Refreshments will be provided.  We will meet at East Gateway Park.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Patricia Shannon-Garvey

Facilitator for the Maintenance of MCC’s Gateway Parks

UW Botanic Gardens Hosts Aquatic Weed Symposium

June 28, 2011 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Managing Aquatic Weeds: Challenges and Opportunities
When: Wednesday July 13, 9am – 3:30 pm
Where: Graham Visitors Center, Washington Park Arboretum
Cost with Walking Tour: $30; pre-registration required
Cost with Kayak Tour: $55l pre-registration required
Box lunch available when you register by July 10

UW Botanic Gardens (UWBG) presents this 1-day symposium on the science and management of aquatic weeds.

In 2009, UWBG was awarded a 5-year Department of Ecology grant for the control of Garden Loosestrife, a class B noxious weed and mandated for control by the King County Weed Board. The full program will consist of both indoor and outdoor sessions, with a box lunch provided. Morning sessions will include a keynote address by Steve Manning, founder and President of Invasive Plant Control, Inc., Katie Messick, King County Noxious Weed Specialist; and, a joint presentation by UWBG and Seattle Parks Department on their Garden Loosestrife eradication programs – observations and challenges. The afternoon session will be devoted to guided tours. Class participants will either be taking a kayak tour around the lagoons or a walking tour through the waterfront trail marshlands. Focus of these tours will be our primary target, Garden Loosestrife, although other aquatic weeds and their control will also be discussed.

Designed for professional audiences, this symposium is open to everyone interested in aquatic weeds and their control.

Gateway Parks Autumn Work Party

August 14, 2010 by webmaster 1 Comment

MONTLAKE GARDENERS

GATEWAY PARKS AUTUMN WORK PARTY

Sunday,
September 19, 2010

24th
Avenue East & Boyer Avenue East.

NOON to 3:00 P.M.

Bring gloves, weeding tools, rakes, clippers, and lots of energy.

Refreshments will be provided.

The Montlake Community Club owns these parks and they must have volunteer maintenance to keep them as green spaces for the Montlake community. Extensive renovation efforts by volunteers has reclaimed them from an unsightly mess of brambles and weeds.

The S.E. corner park has seen much progress this year. Six beds of northwest natives have been planted, and plans are in work for a traversing path and additional plantings of northwest natives.

We will be weeding, raking, and cleaning both parks to prepare them for fall.

We need your help

Thank You in advance for volunteering.

Please e-mail if you can come, even for just a short time: GatewayParks@Montlake.net

Ground Swell: What We Grow and Eat in Montlake

February 16, 2010 by webmaster Leave a Comment

The ‘eat local’ movement is everywhere these days, Montlake included, and this month begins a new feature in the Montlake Flyer where I’ll write about what we grow and how we eat in this microclimate and about what’s happening at the nearby farmers markets.

Now, I’m no expert. I kill about as many plants as I coax to adulthood, and my compost suffers from too much green, never enough browns. But I’m a good eater and I’m reasonable. I won’t tell you to give up coffee and its six thousand “food miles”.  For each monthly feature I’ll seek out neighbors with real kitchen and gardening experience and share their tips and tricks here.  Email me about what you and your neighbors are growing at audreyyoungmd@….

In the garden: This month the garden begins to emerge from hibernation, and now is the time to get ready for the growing seasons.  First and foremost that means getting your soil prepared.  If you’re just starting out, let me vouch for the fact that you can’t grow healthy vegetables in Montlake’s heavy clay soil, which gets saturated during the rainy months and hard and dry in summer.  You’ll want to amend the soil with compost and to improve aeration and nutrient content. And consider building or rehabilitating raised beds this month — there are several excellent examples around the ‘hood along parking strips and in backyards.

At the farmers markets: During the winter, the University District farmers market is open Saturdays 9 am to 2 pm, and the West Seattle market is open Sundays 10 am to 2 pm (http://www.seattlefarmersmarkets.org/).  You’ll find cold weather greens like kale, brassicas like cabbage, plus squashes, apples, carrots, rutabagas, and potatoes. Also: eggs, chickens, troll-caught salmon, beef, pork, dairy products, and hazelnuts. Consider a CreadiSA (community-supported agriculture) subscription for spring and summer, which gives you a weekly box of seasonal produce from a local farm such as Willie Green’s, Local Roots, Full Circle, Whistling Train, or Growing Things farms.

Seeds – Buy Them or Swap Them

February 16, 2010 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Plant and seed catalogs are just now arriving on our door steps.  Take advantage of local resources first: they’re better and locally grown and harvested.  Don’t overdo it and buy out the store – remember, February is for planning what to grow in the garden.

Community Harvest of Southwest Seattle is ordering bulk seeds from major seed vendors so you can try unique varieties.  Buy small packets for $.75 or bring your seeds for free swapping 1-4 pm Saturday February 20 at the north entrance to South Seattle Community College (1600 16th Ave. SW, West Seattle).
