UW Botanic Gardens Hosts Aquatic Weed Symposium

June 28, 2011 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Managing Aquatic Weeds: Challenges and Opportunities
When: Wednesday July 13, 9am – 3:30 pm
Where: Graham Visitors Center, Washington Park Arboretum
Cost with Walking Tour: $30; pre-registration required
Cost with Kayak Tour: $55l pre-registration required
Box lunch available when you register by July 10

UW Botanic Gardens (UWBG) presents this 1-day symposium on the science and management of aquatic weeds.

In 2009, UWBG was awarded a 5-year Department of Ecology grant for the control of Garden Loosestrife, a class B noxious weed and mandated for control by the King County Weed Board. The full program will consist of both indoor and outdoor sessions, with a box lunch provided. Morning sessions will include a keynote address by Steve Manning, founder and President of Invasive Plant Control, Inc., Katie Messick, King County Noxious Weed Specialist; and, a joint presentation by UWBG and Seattle Parks Department on their Garden Loosestrife eradication programs – observations and challenges. The afternoon session will be devoted to guided tours. Class participants will either be taking a kayak tour around the lagoons or a walking tour through the waterfront trail marshlands. Focus of these tours will be our primary target, Garden Loosestrife, although other aquatic weeds and their control will also be discussed.

Designed for professional audiences, this symposium is open to everyone interested in aquatic weeds and their control.
