Coffee lovers lucky enough to seek their java fix late Sunday afternoon (Aug 23) at FUEL, were also served up a warm portion of musical entertainment by Montlake resident, Lisa Furukawa. Demonstrating soulful keyboard style and a delicate, yet powerful voice, Lisa kept her coffee-sipping audience engaged with ethereal songs all her own. Her folk pop ballads showed inspiration from Japanese mythical themes and Celtic jigs.
A touring musician, this Montlake resident has taken her music to Japanese and Celtic folk festivals, and Japanese animation and media conventions around the world. Yet, she easily brought her music into the intimate coffee house space in this, her Montlake debut. Lisa offered a tasty menu of original music that can be found on four albums on her independent label Yume Records, and an EP with her band Cloudsang. Visit her website at Lisafurukawa.com and see her perform on YouTube.
Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Lisa Furukawa grew up in Japan and America in a musical family and studied classical music from a young age. After receiving her degrees in Music and Asian studies from UNC-Chapel Hill, she began composing pop songs with chamber groups, recording albums, and touring regularly while maintaining a vibrant studio of piano students. Lisa is currently working on a bilingual (Japanese and English) children’s album about her cat. She enjoys singing and playing music with her husband, Leon Monroe, and their toddler, both of whom were in the appreciative audience at FUEL.
