Give Now To Save The Market

August 9, 2017 by MontlakeFlyer 1 Comment

The Montlake Community Club is amazed by the outpouring of support from Montlake and beyond to fund its legal case to save the Montlake Blvd Market. Nearly 100 people have donated so far. But we are still short, having raised $9,500 of our $15,000 goal. Help us make up the gap by giving today. We have an important court hearing this Friday and our legal bills are coming in. Every one of your contributions helps, no matter how big or small. Donate using Paypal (click the big black Donate button on the right side of the page) or give here: https://www.gofundme.com/save-the-montlake-market

More info:

We need your help! The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is attempting to condemn our beloved Montlake Market (Hop-in) and the 76 gas station. They will be demolished to make way for the 520 highway expansion. WSDOT’s actions have been marked by a lack of transparency, poor community engagement, and inadequate consideration to environments impacts.

The Montlake Community Club has hired an environmental attorney to fight this unjust action who has successfully convinced the court to allow us to present testimony at a court hearing later this month. Unfortunately, this is very expensive and our legal costs are adding up quickly.

We urgently need your financial support to help pay our lawyers and continue the fight. Can you give $25, $100, or even $1,000? Please consider giving more if you are able. Your donations are tax deductible. You can make a donation in one of these ways:

1. Use the big black Donate button on the right to use Paypal

2. Go to our GoFundMe page

3. Mail a check to:

Ask your friends and neighbors to do the same.

I’ll be brief here/today: Earlier, Metro Transit wildly chopped-up Montlake’s Prime Route 43 surface-bus service when the “test-trains” UNDER Montlake paved the way for moving their service to Light-Rail at Husky Stadium — a “Take That, Montlake” take-away action! This is verified in present Metro schedules — Route 43 now has only 5 to 10 percent of the service it once had! And a lot of those remaining runs are at, what? (crazy though it seems!): 2 a.m., 5 a.m., midnight; 11 PM on Sunday evening, etc. And, Route 25 is no more! One elderly Montlaker wrote in, to this MCC site (this is an approximation): “I’m 78 years old and I depend on surface-bus service to get around … Do they really expect me to walk 40 minutes or more, just to reach a new bus or train-stop to begin a ride?”

So, already gone is decent connection between home and neighborhood grocery! Now consider this:

WSDOT (+whatever other bureaus!) threatens “we’ll take your food-supplier (grocery-store) and food-supplies too.” Hey, are they REALLY going to put their highway-supplies where food has been sold? They widened the exit to 3 lanes of traffic, thus barring access even more between those supplies and their project!! It is NOT extreme to exclaim that this begins to look more and more like “takeover;” and reminds us of Nazi acts that trampled people and led to starvation for MANY !! Are we going to sit still for this, or campaign to bring the reality of these anti-Montlake actions out in the open?

(Signed – and serious about this) Larry Fogdall, Montlake (a Past Community-Club President; and a Past Chair of the Citizens Transit Advisory Committee)
