UW Hosts 30th Annual Windermere Cup May 7

Windermere-Cup-2016_promoCollege rowing’s most picturesque setting hosts the sport’s most well-attended regatta as the Windermere Cup returns for its 30th year Saturday, May 7, on the Montlake Cut.

The weather forecast looks sunny so come down and cheer on the Huskies as they take on Russia, Cambridge, Stanford and University of San Diego.

The Windermere Cup is the feature of Seattle’s Yacht Club’s annual Opening Day of boating season, a tradition that dates back over a century. Get all of the details and race schedule here.

Battle of the Stations – Windermere Cup Media Cup Crew Races on May 4

On Wednesday, May 4, Seattle’s local TV news teams will battle it out along the Montlake Cut for the fifth annual Windermere Cup – Media Cup crew races. Led by captains Mike Ferreri (KOMO), Joyce Taylor (KING), Bridgett Turell (Q13), and Cale Ramaker (KIRO), the teams each consist of some of Seattle’s best known local media personalities.

The KOMO team has taken home the highly coveted Media Cup trophy four of the past five years after losing to KIRO in the race’s first year. Bragging rights are a major objective of these highly competitive crews, but they’re also in it for charity. The winning team receives a $500 donation from Windermere Real Estate to go to their non-profit organization of choice.

So come down to the Montlake Cut at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4, to see an epic battle of the Seattle news teams. And then join us again on Saturday, May 7 for the 30th annual Windermere Cup Regatta.

It’s time to Obliteride!

Amy-FB-Cover-pic-Its-time-to-go-for-itOn Sunday, Aug. 9, approximately 1,000 riders participating in Fred Hutch’s 3rd annual Obliteride will be riding through Montlake.

Neighbors are asked to look out for cyclists and cheer for riders along Fuhrman and Boyer.

Obliteride has five routes ranging from 10 to 150 miles, so everyone can participate. All routes start at Fred Hutch and end at Gas Works Park.

A new family-friendly 10-mile route loops Lake Union and benefits women’s cancer research at Fred Hutch.

Obliteride Kids’ Rides

obliterideday2-3681Fred Hutch’s 3rd Annual Obliteride will be rolling through Montlake again this summer on August 9, but in the meantime check out these fun new ways kids can participate this year, starting this Sunday.

• Sunday, May 17: Ob’little’ride: At this free event, kids ages 3–10 are invited to decorate their bikes and ride in a bike parade at University Village in Seattle. There’s also kids’ yoga, kids’ zumba and a performance by Mr. Brian & His Good Buddies, plus a balloon artist, trampoline and more. 11 a.m.–2 p.m.

 • Saturday, July 11: Obliteride Kids’ Ride at Mercer Island Summer Celebration in Mercerdale Park. Kids ages 3-13 can ride a one-mile loop (or more loops, if they are ambitious); $20 to participate. If they are interested, kids can collect pledges for the number of laps they ride by downloading a pledge form on the Obliteride website.

• Sunday, August 9: Obliteride. Kids ages 10–17 can pedal their own bikes on the new Obliteride 10-mile route around Lake Union; while younger kids (3–9) can ride attached to their parent’s bike on a tag-along or tandem bike. (The accompanying parent must pay a $100 registration fee and commit to raising $500 to ride the 10-mile route.) Funds raised will be directed to women’s cancer research.

Windermere Cup is this Saturday

Windermere-Cup-posterCome participate in one of Seattle’s best traditions and cheer on the Huskies as they take on world-class competition, with the World Champion Men’s New Zealand Rowing Team and traditional power Columbia Heavyweight Rowing coming to face the UW men’s crew, and No. 3 Virginia matching up against the No. 4 UW women’s crew.

Watch all the action this Saturday, May 2, on the Montlake Cut with races beginning at 10:20 a.m.

In addition to the competition, the Windermere Cup is a family-friendly community event that is part of the Seattle Yacht Club’s Opening Day Festivities. Food vendors, booths to purchase Washington apparel and Windermere Cup commemorative gear, as well as a bouncy house will be located on the northwest side of the Montlake Cut behind the UW Medical Center.

Other special attractions this year include a Stan Pocock Memorial Row through the Cut to honor the late rowing legend at the conclusion of the races, followed by a helicopter flyover conducted by the U.S. Army at the beginning of the Opening Day Parade.

The Boys—and Girls—in the Boat on Montlake Cut this Saturday

Womens-8-SunriseCome cheer on the Husky men’s and women’s crews as they face their biggest rival, the California Bears, this Saturday on the Montlake Cut. Racing goes from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. rain or shine!

The New York Times bestselling book, The Boys in the Boat, has recast the spotlight on the fierce rivalry between Washington and Cal. The rowing powers will go head to head this Saturday for the 104th time in a regatta that played a central role in the book.

Fans are encouraged to watch the races from Canoe House at the NE end of the Montlake Cut, the Montlake Bridge or at the Finish Line at the west end of the Cut at West Montlake Park near the Seattle Yacht Club. If you can’t make it to the Cut, tune into the live stream of the races online.

It’s a fun family event and an opportunity to see the four-time defending National Champions UW men’s crew in action.

The Windermere Cup is up next on May 2.

Husky Crew Races Saturday

2014 University of Washington Crew Class RegattaCome cheer on the Huskies as they kick off racing season with one of their many longstanding traditions at the 114th Class Day Regatta this Saturday, March 28, beginning at 10 a.m.

Fans are encouraged to watch from the Montlake Cut and at the Finish Line at the west end of the Cut at West Montlake Park near the Seattle Yacht Club.

It’s a fun family event and an opportunity to see the four-time defending National Champions men’s crew in action.

This is one of only four home races for the Huskies this season. Mark your calendar for the other home races: Husky Open on April 4; the Cal Dual on April 25; and the Windermere Cup on May 2.

Obliteride Rolls Through Montlake on Sunday

MontlakeMontlake is going orange for Obliteride – to help Fred Hutch end cancer.

Have you noticed the bright orange signs in our neighborhood alerting folks that participants in the 2nd annual fundraising bike ride for Fred Hutch will be riding through Montlake on Sunday, August 10th?

It’s supposed to be a beautiful weekend, so come outside and cheer the riders on. A fun event for neighbors, families and kids to do. You can make signs (Welcome to Montlake!), cheer, ring cowbells, –  just like the Tour De France!

The route goes from Magnuson Park to the University Bridge, Fuhrman, to Boyer to 26th to 28th and then to Madison Valley en route to Seward Park, and then back through Montlake on the same streets.

    • 7:45 am – 11:30 am (in larger groups) based on staggered starts of 100, 50, 25 mile routes from Magnuson Park.
    • 12:00 pm-7:00 pm Return of all routes. (spread out, will look like a normal Sunday of cyclists traffic)
