Good day and Happy New Year friends, families and neighbors of Montlake Elementary!
Volunteers Needed to Ensure the Turkey Trot is a Success!
This year will be the 4th year of the Montlake Turkey Trot. The goal of this event is rooted in community building by providing a fun and healthy way to come together while helping our neighbors in need. We are fortunate to live next to one of Seattle’s most treasured outdoor spaces, the Washington Park Arboretum. We are so lucky they are willing to grant our neighborhood special privileges to use our beloved park for charitable purposes! In just three short years, we have built a race that the community treasures and have donated $63,000 to the University District Food Bank. In 2018, the donation was $30,000 and this year we are aiming for $45,000! With your help we can make this goal a reality!
With only 1 day to go, we have CRITICAL volunteer positions unfilled!!
Events of this scale require a certain level of police presence. Sadly, due to budgetary reasons, Seattle Police can not staff the event to the level required. However, they are granting us our permit to hold the event but we must provide enough course marshals to monitor traffic and ensure the safety of our runners. Of further note, because of all the growth and development across our city the Special Events Department is no longer issuing permits for new events. Luckily, the Montlake Turkey Trot is grandfathered as long as we meet the requirements. In a nutshell – our event is in jeopardy in the future if we do not provide enough course marshals.
If you aren’t running in the event and plan to be home on Thanksgiving, please consider being a Course Marshal. We need about 30, and so far we only have 13 signed up. The volunteer sign up sheet for these positions is titled COURSE CHEERLEADERS. We’ll have coffee, donuts, and hand warmers 🙂 Sign up to volunteer.

Calling all neighbors- Montlake Elementary needs your help!
Please join your neighbors at a Montlake Elementary work party on Sunday, October 27th from 9-3. Come for an hour or stay for the day. Tools and coffee will be provided. Bring gloves if you have them (we can provide them if you don’t have them). We will be cleaning up the school grounds and getting the garden ready for winter. There is A LOT to do!
This is a great chance to get to know other families in the neighborhood, catch up with old friends, build community and make our neighborhood elementary school look sharp! Kid participation is welcome and encouraged!
What will we be doing? We will weed throughout, put down compost and wood chips where needed and hopefully edge the sidewalks. Also, if anyone has an electric or gas lawn edger, please let me know if you would be willing to let us borrow it. I can pick it up if you are not able to attend the work party. It would be ideal to have two or three.

You’re Invited: Hear District 3 City Council Candidates and SDOT on Tuesday, June 11
Please join us for our last Montlake Community Club board meeting of the 2018-2019 year on Tuesday, June 11 at the Boyer Children’s Clinic. We will have special guests in attendance. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will have a short presentation about segment 2 of the 23rd Avenue Vision Zero Project. They are in the design phase and would like to solicit community feedback. This project will directly impact the business district of Montlake. One proposed design element is an enhanced pedestrian crosswalk at and E. Lynn Street and 24th Ave E. You can read more about it here.
We will also have 3 of the 6 candidates running for District 3 City Council seat: Pat Murakami, Logan Bowers, and Ami Nguyen. Orion Egan and Zachary DeWolf both have campaign kick-off events on the night of our meeting so can’t make it. We have not heard back from Kshama Sawant’s campaign at this time. We have prepared questions revolving around the SDOT projects (Vision Zero and traffic mitigation from the SR-520 project), public transit cuts that impact Montlake, and city oversight of the SR-520 project.
The meeting is held in the basement of the Boyer Children’s Clinic, which can be accessed via the parking garage on E. Howe Street. The city will have a small display set up starting at 6:30 and the meeting will start promptly at 7pm. You can also purchase Montlake Gear before the meeting.
Last day for online registration
Online registration for the Montlake 5K Turkey Trot and Kids Run will end today at 5pm. Runners can still sign up on the day of the race, but prices increase to $40 (5K) and $20 (kids run).
Also- don’t forget that runners and non-runners alike can still donate to the University Food Bank. Anyone that donates $10 will be entered to win a raffle for Cafe Lago gift certificates and you don’t need to be present to win. Every $10 donated gets an entry.

And, if you aren’t running- come cheer runners on and be part of the fun!
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
Join Us to Run the New Arboretum Loop!
Fall weather is here and the Montlake Community Club’s 5K Turkey Trot & Kids Run is a week away. This year the Thanksgiving morning course will allow Turkey Trotters a sneak preview of the new Arboretum Loop Trail which is scheduled to officially open in March. There’s still time to register. All proceeds benefit the University District Food Bank. Sign up here!
New Arboretum Loop Trail
This multi-use trail opens up previously inaccessible parts of the Arboretum and allows a close up view of the newly restored Arboretum creek and wetlands. Last year, the Montlake Turkey Trot was the 1st running race ever to take place in the Arboretum and now we will be the first to use the new trail! I have ran the route myself a few times and it is spectacular. I can’t think of a better way to start out my Thanksgiving morning. Don’t delay-sign up now and join us!
