Interlaken Park Path & Stair Replacement

June 28, 2018 by Montlake Flyer 2 Comments

Work on a new staircase and ramp to Interlaken Park is scheduled to begin in July. They will connect Boyer Ave E and Interlaken Blvd. at the E Howe St. crosswalk. The project features a bicycle runnel, guard rails, and a switchback. Access should be facilitated for all. The E Howe St crossing will be well integrated with the park and the 23rd/central greenway.

The planned construction period is Summer-Fall 2018. The trail and sidewalk will be closed for the entire period. Noise and loss of parking in front of the project site are anticipated.

The Seattle Parks and Recreation Activating and Connecting to Greenways program, in partnership with SDOT, has awarded the contract to WS Contractors. Kudos to the Montlake and Capitol Hill community and neighborhood greenways volunteers who have worked towards this goal with determination and humor. Thanks to the SDOT and Parks teams who persisted and removed the hurdles to this project.

Lighting — after the current project now beginning, just south of Boyer and 23rd (and/or Howe)… A valid question to ask! I hope so. I will be a user, but I have no knowledge about this “connector” project that is now commencing. Now, I hope, “we” can move on to a related project: getting a return to having good bus service between Montlake (including “Interlaken”) and such places as Miller park, Kaiser-Hospital and nearby businesses, and on to downtown without a BUNCH of required transfers! Think of it — planners, without much (or any?) contact(s) with Montlake, decided: “let’s drop Montlake’s service to downtown” – er, at least 95 or so percent of it (their timetable is a JOKE!) Is it any wonder that at least some downtown stores (Macy’s comes to mind) report “store-traffic is down” and similar negative results. Have you seen the interior of downtown Macy’s as it has reduced to 2 or 3 floors? It is “no wonder!” They have “swept away” good transit between Montlake and downtown, and left us with scraps! Install transportation barriers that are negatives for people, and the words just above are, and WILL BE, the result!

Will all of this come with appropriate lighting?
