Musicians & Artists Treat Traveler’s Diners

IMG_1676A special happy hour at the Traveler Montlake on the 14th: Songwriters performed their favorite tunes; artists offered their creations; diners tried out the new Montlake sliders & Montlake Mules—a winning combination for guests on a sunshine filled Sunday evening. On the mezzanine, Clark Snyder, Moss, and Bob Freed with rhythm man Roger, brought applause with their original songs of lost hubcaps, unopened boxes, homeless dogs, and broken hearts.

IMG_1628In the front window section, diners purchased special watercolors and jewelry shown by artists Gail Wong and Mary Freiburger. All this happiness offered with the gracious hosting of Traveler’s Manager, Anna Brameld.

Max Entertains On Guitar Amidst Antiques

IMG_1515Just a week ago, Max Mondzac took time out of his busy high school graduation schedule to play for the community in the doorway of Mr. Johnson’s Antiques in our Montlake downtown. Max expertly brought forth tunes from classical to contemporary, competing with the noise of heavy traffic on the street. An appreciative audience perched on collectible chairs from Matt Johnson’s merchandise, then strolled inside to check out the other amazing antiques. You stroll in too–and look for Max in other Montlake locations as the summer progresses.

See Art at Glam & Tonics Aveda and Edward Jones

BillWeitkamp2014Take a walk to downtown Montlake during June to enjoy the art work of three of Montlake’s painters who paint just for the sheer pleasure of it. Bill Weitkamp’s large-scale colorful abstracts and impressionist oil paintings and some watercolors are on display in the Edward Jones Investments office. You can view the big ones through the windows, but if you visit when the office is open, you might just walk back in to see all the rest. Say Hi to Cynthia, the Office Manager and Allen, the Financial Advisor too. They’ll be glad to see you.

Make your way next door to Glam & Tonics Aveda and stroll on in to appreciate the vibrant flowers done with watercolors by Marjorie Domenowske and the brightly colored abstracts shown by DeDe Domenowske. The eye-catching paintings are placed throughout the salon, so you want to be sure to look around to see them all. And while you are there, say hello to Juan, Justin, and the rest of the crew. Jazz Hands Delight At Cafe Lago

Wednesday night, the Jazz Hands brought smiles to the faces of the crowd at Café Lago, helped families celebrate graduations, and added a lively step to the already energetic Café staff. If you were there, you heard the good jazz sounds of Edgar Haimerl, Traci Staffen, Ben Wheeler, & Bonnie Birch. Look for this group in Montlake again in July. All this fun provided by your Montlake Community Club.

Max Mondzac Stars at Mr. Johnson’s Antiques

maxresdefaultIt’s a busy week for Max Mondzac: 1) Graduate from Northwest School 2) Celebrate 3) Play guitar at Mr. Johnson’s Antiques in downtown Montlake. You may not be able to get to the graduation ceremony or celebration, BUT you certainly can join him on Sunday, the 14th from 1:30 to 3:00 at Matt Johnson’s doorway 2315 24th Ave E. Hear Max playing some favorite guitar classics, some new finger style favorites, and maybe if you’re lucky, some of his own compositions.

Not too long ago (April), Max entertained at Town Hall for the Arts Fest Gala and wowed about 500 people with his version of a Tommy Emmanuel tune, The Tall Fiddler. Take a listen:   Max plays with Apollo 8, the Seattle band that you may have heard perform in the area–including Montlake Elementary’s Art Walk. Come out and give Max a hearing –and congratulate him on his graduation; ask him about his plans too. And while you’re there, browse Mr. Johnson’s Antiques. You’ll find something to carry home and cherish.

Music & Art Arrive At Traveler Montlake Next Sunday

June 14, in celebration of Montlake Unabridged, Traveler Montlake welcomes neighborhood musicians and artists and new menu items too! Sunday, from 5 to 7 p.m, Clark Snyder, Moss, & Bob Free play and sing in “Songwriters in the Round.” For “Show & Sell,” Mary Freiburger offers unique jewelry, & Gail Wong presents amazing watercolor sketchworks. Come to listen. Come to buy precious treasures. Come to eat and sip.

To tickle your tastebuds, The Traveler has cooked up NEW menu items: The Montlake Slider, of American Wagyu Ground Beef, American Cheese, Diced Onions and Pickles, with Garlic Aioli. Then there’s the new Montlake Mule, of Skyy Vodka Blueberry, Lime Juice and Gingerbeer, served with a lime wheel. AND for the kids, Pomegranate Lemonade.

Good Jazz, Good Food, Good Company–All At Cafe Lago

MG_0909Café Lago welcomes YOU and the JAZZ HANDS on June 10 (7-9 p.m.) for an evening of Good Jazz, Good Food, and Good Company. This isn’t just your ordinary Wednesday night in Montlake. It’s a celebration of Montlake Unabridged— when our community spotlights its talent for neighbors and friends, hosted by our fine local Montlake businesses.

The Jazz Hands band plays jazz standards, Gypsy jazz, and more. Included in this versatile group, are Edgar Haimerl, Ben Wheeler, Traci Staffen, and Bonnie Birch, all talented musicians who clearly enjoy playing together. (You may remember them from our 2013 and 2014 All-Montlake Music & Arts Happenings.)

On the 10th, Café Lago will be offering their fantastic wood-fire pizzas for $15, and other superb, seasonal Italian delights to tempt your palate. And, of course, wines and other beverages to complement. Finally, who could resist the desserts? Lemon tart for me; Panna cotta for you?

Montlake’s Got Talent: Let’s Enjoy It!

Coming Monday! Your Montlake Neighbor & Writer: Margot Kahn Case

kahn48472Montlake Unabridged spotlights the talents of our neighbor and writer, Margot Kahn Case on

    Monday, May 4 at the Montlake Library from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.

Margot reads from her biography:

    Horses That Buck: The Story of Champion Bronc Rider Bill Smith

She will then talk about the 15 years of research and relationships that led up to and followed the hardcover publication in 2008 by the University of Oklahoma Press. Its 4th edition is newly released in paperback this month.

Margot Kahn Case spent seven years on the ranch and behind the bucking chutes to write Horses. She is a graduate of Columbia University’s MFA program and a recipient of numerous awards, including a CityArtist award and a grant from 4Culture. She is currently an artist- in-residence at Franklin High School. About the Bronc Rider, she says: “Bill Smith saw rodeo as his only ticket to escaping a life in the coal mines. Without money, talent, or a rodeo family to help him along, he went down the road with nothing but “want to” and, over the course of a twenty-year career, became one of the greatest saddle bronc riders of all time.”

Phinney Books will have copies of the book to sell Monday night, and we bet Margot will happily autograph your copy. The Library Staff will welcome you. The Montlake Community Club will provide refreshments. Why not come over to the Montlake library to hear your talented neighbor read, talk with her about what it takes to research and write a biography, and get your own autographed copy to take home? Montlakers have talent; let’s enjoy it on Monday night, the 4th!

MONTLAKE UNABRIDGED: Spotlighting Our Writers, Artists, and Musicians

Hey Montlake Neighbors! This year, instead of a single Sunday afternoon to enjoy our Artists, Musicians, and Writers, we’re staging a whole series of events from May to October. It’s Montlake Unabridged. And we’re showing off right in Down Town Montlake at our local library and businesses!

Montlake’s talent is just too big for one day and one place. So we’re expanding to (drum roll, please)  Montlake Unabridged —lining up authors for monthly readings and conversations at our local Library– featuring our artists and musicians  at the library and main street businesses — like FUEL, the Traveler Montlake, and Glam & Tonics (with more locations to come)–All good reasons to spend more time in Down Town Montlake.

Montlake Unabridged kicks off by spotlighting author, Margot Kahn Case on Monday, May 4 at the Library from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. She’ll read from her biography: Horses That Buck: The Story of Champion Bronc Rider Bill Smith, newly released in paperback this month. There may even be autographed copies of the book to buy. The Library Staff will welcome you, while The Montlake Community Club will provide refreshments.
