Artist Elizabeth Sandvig Paints “Hair”

September 8, 2015 by gehrkenathalie 1 Comment

IMG_0359Montlake neighbors are fortunate to view the artworks of Elizabeth Sandvig on display at Glam & Tonics Aveda in September (1-15).

Sandvig is “a distinguished artist and longtime contributor to the civic and cultural life of Washington State”—so says the announcement by the Artist Trust upon her receipt of the 2007 Twining Humber Award for artistic excellence in the Northwest. The announcement continued, “…Elizabeth’s work is bold, something’s humorous, and often delivered in color that is explosive and joyous….” Her current show on the theme of “Hair” is all those things, delivered in delightful diminutive frames in the perfect location—our Mid-town Glam & Tonics Salon. Come to see Rapunzel, Lady Godiva, and other mythic and imagined women whose tresses have captured Elizabeth Sandvig’s playful attention. It will make you smile AND confirm just how fortunate we are to have this remarkable artist in our neighborhood.

Elizabeth explains that she was born in Seattle and raised by an extraordinary mother in Washington D.C. and Mexico City. She chose to be an artist by the age of 14 and has spent her life “working at it and occasionally something ‘visual’ happens.” Following her education at Pomona College and then Harvard University, she spent 3 years in Mexico City making and exhibiting her work. In 1963 she returned to Seattle with her husband, Michael Spafford and their infant son. By 1966 she began exhibiting at the Francine Seders Gallery, which became a decades-long relationship.

Montlake folks had the opportunity to view Elizabeth Sandvig’s works at the 2013 and 2014 All Montlake Music & Arts Happenings. Now, you get to see this all new collection of tiny treasures on display at Glam & Tonics Aveda. Stroll in and get up close to them whenever the salon is open. The beauty specialists there will welcome you, just as they’ve welcomed Elizabeth’s work for this and the several shows that preceded it this summer.

Enjoy a peek at the paintings below, photographed by Jonathan Phillips. This show is sponsored by your Montlake Community Club through Montlake Unabridged.

April 29, 2014 by gehrkenathalie Leave a Comment

artistWe know you’re out there. We know you’re good at the art form or writing that you do. NOW, young or old, professional or amateur, we urge you to show your friends and neighbors your good works. It’s not a sale. It’s a celebration.

Please join in the celebration of  Montlake’s talents by bringing your creations to the Montlake Community Center on Sunday afternoon, May 18 for the All-Montlake Music & Arts Happening, aka AMMAH.

All you have to do to get involved is send an e-mail message to AMMAHappening@montlake.net, then we’ll answer any questions you may have, and ask you for some information about yourself and your work. Just like that you’ll be added to the participants (No jury; No fee; No fuss). We’ll send participants information on procedures as the date nears, AND the date is nearing. This is our last “All-Call,” so don’t hesitate. Get on Board!
