Happy Fall season fellow Montlake residents! Meditate Seattle’s weekly Meditation/ Mindfulness Groups have resumed meeting in the Montlake studio. Participants spend ½ hour sitting silently and observing their breath, or silently repeating a simple sound. You do not need any experience to join, just arrive a few minutes early for instructions, and/or questions. You don’t even need to register or apply, just come to the studio on Thursdays at 9:30 AM or 6:30 PM. There is no cost to attend; this is offered as a community service.

There is now a bounty of research about the benefits of a regular meditation/ mindfulness practice. The studies show that both your physiology and your mental function improve, even after only a few sessions. There is even new research showing that meditation can affect your DNA to activate health genes, and deactivate inflammation genes.

If you are interested in the specific changes brought about by meditation, Meditate Seattle has produced a 15 minute video that describes all the benefits, and instructs you in the basics of meditation.

New Montlake Meditation and Mindfulness Groups

September 19, 2014 by MaryDavis 2 Comments

IMG_2390Since January, 2014, a group of neighbors has been meeting at Meditate Seattle’s Montlake studio, on Thursday mornings, for a simple 30 minute group meditation. Participants sit with eyes closed and focus on their breath, or silently repeat a simple phrase. Repeatedly bringing the attention back to a specific focus creates new neural pathways in the brain, and trains your brain to pay attention.

There are now multitudes of studies showing the physical and psychological benefits of regular meditation. New research is detailing how beneficial this practice is to the brain.

Mary Davis, Family Nurse Practitioner and co-owner of Meditate Seattle, has just completed training in the Mindfulness for Children Curriculum. The two main benefits for children, documented by research, are improved attention and improved emotional regulation. Children learn simple techniques to pay attention to the present moment. Each week they learn a new skill from focusing on breath to kindness in relationships.

Meditate Seattle is excited to announce the addition of several new groups starting October 9:

    • For adults, a second Meditation/ Mindfulness group will be added on Thursday evenings at 6PM for 30 minutes.
    • Mindfulness for Children, Elementary school age, Thursdays 4 PM, for 15 minutes
    • Mindfulness for Children, Middle school age, Thursdays 4:30 PM, for 15 minutes

As with the regular morning group, there is no charge for participation in these groups and no experience is required. Parents will be asked to attend with their Elementary school age children. Middle school age students may attend alone. Each class is about 15 minutes long.

Mary is also offering a 3 hour Health and Happiness Class on Saturday morning, October 4 from 9AM to noon. This class covers the latest research and practices to decrease stress, improve health and increase the happiness you experience in your life. The class includes instruction in a basic meditation practice. Cost for the class is $50 per person.

If you have any questions regarding any of the groups or the class, please feel free to contact Mary Davis.

Healthy and Happy 2014!

February 6, 2014 by MaryDavis Leave a Comment

IMG_06372I am delighted to announce that I will be hosting two new weekly

Neighborhood Drop-in Meditation Groups

Thursdays 9:30AM and 6:30PM.

Beginning on Thursday, February 27, the groups will meet for a ½ hour silent meditation every week. All are welcome, no experience required. The morning group will meet at 9:30 AM and the evening group will meet at 6:30 PM. There is no charge for these groups, but donations will be accepted to offset the cost of heating and maintaining the meditation studio.

The studio is located behind our house at 2145 Boyer Ave East, corner of 18th E and Boyer E. If you walk up the first driveway on 18th E, you will arrive at the studio. It is open only for classes, groups, and by appointment.

Bruce and I have lived in our current house in Montlake for over 35 years. We know many of you as neighbors, and through our past roles as PTA presidents, community center advisory council members, coaches or parents (of now adult children.) We are excited to bring meditation and wellness practices to our neighborhood.

If you would like an explanation of meditation and the benefits it bestows, please join me for a

Free Introduction to Meditation Class 9AM on Saturday, February 22.

You will learn the health benefits of meditation and leave with an easy practice to implement at home.

I am a Family Nurse Practitioner with 35 years of primary care work and 40+ years of meditation practice. My past experience includes faculty positions at Seattle University College of Nursing and University of Washington Nursing School, as well as staff positions at Group Health Cooperative, private practice in Marysville and Country Doctor Community Clinic. I am a certified meditation instructor through the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in San Diego, focusing full time on wellness and meditation instruction.

In addition to the Meditation groups and classes, I offer

  • A 5 week course titled the “Keys to Health and Happiness”
  • Individual health and happiness consultations
  • Individual instruction in Primordial Sound Meditation

I would be delighted to tell you more about these classes, or you can visit our website at MeditateSeattle.com.

Please let me know if you would like to attend either of the meditation groups, or the Introductory Meditation Class. I look forward to hearing from you, or meeting you soon!
