Seattle: On Foot / Eye Level – a large scale public service art

December 14, 2023 by Miho Nasu Leave a Comment

Seattle:  On Foot | Eye Level
, a large-scale public service art project, celebrating the public service employees (federal, state, and local) and community leaders behind the often invisible infrastructure that makes the Seattle function.

The endeavor pulls together three threads to illuminate the stories of these individuals and our city:

  • Walking all the streets of Seattle over the course of 12 – 15 months beginning January 2024 to honor their service to the city.
  • Documenting the walk with photos as I progress through the neighborhoods and conducting interviews with public service employees and community leaders which will be uploaded to a website / blog.
  • Embroidering a large scale (approximately 8’ x 14’) map of the streets of Seattle and inviting the public to attend “embroidery” events at libraries, community centers, and similar venues to witness the map emerge.  The embroidery stitch will have a “tactile clarity” enabling the blind and low-vision community to “see” it.Upon completion the embroidered map and other documentary materials will be given to a yet to be determined Seattle institution for permanent display.

The walk will start in Montlake, Madison Park, Madison Valley and Capital Hill in January 2024 — continuing clockwise through southeast Seattle, West Seattle, downtown, Lake Union, Queen Anne, Magnolia | Interbay, and so on concluding at the University of Washington Campus.

For more information on the project please feel free to contact Beth Lowry — 206.913.7829 | lb53ber@gmail.com
