Holiday Light Fundraiser at Cafe Lago

December 2, 2015 by BryanHaworth Leave a Comment

IMG_4083Please join us this Sunday, December 6th, between 5-9 pm for a special Montlake Holiday Light Fundraising Party at Cafe Lago.  There will be free hot apple cider for the kids, a free glass of Prosecco for the adults, festive music, a raffle, and of course, fabulous food!

IMG_4020The holiday season is upon us and the Montlake Community Club wants our neighborhood, like many others, to have an inviting festive atmosphere, so the beautiful white holiday lights are once again up in downtown Montlake and on the Montlake Boulevard Market.  Cafe Lago has generously offered to sponsor this fundraising event and will contribute 10% of their proceeds for the night toward the cost of the lights.

Please call Cafe Lago at 206-329-8005 to make a reservation or go to CafeLago.com.  Thank you for your support, we hope to see you there!

Oct. 24 – 25 Weekend Closure of the Montlake Bridge

October 23, 2015 by montlake Leave a Comment

2015_1013_ClosureMap

Via WSDOT

Reminder: Oct. 24-25 weekend closure of the Montlake Bridge, SR 520 ramps and local streets

From 5 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, WSDOT maintenance crews will close the Montlake Bridge in both directions, the westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard and a single lane of the eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard. Crews will use this closure to begin needed repairs to the bridge’s metal grid deck. Weather-permitting, crews will also intermittently close single lanes along East Park Drive East, along westbound East Lake Washington Boulevard between 24th Avenue East and Montlake Boulevard, and along northbound and southbound Montlake Boulevard between East Hamlin Street and East Roanoke Street to complete paving activities.

Closure details:

  • The SR 520 mainline will remain open, as will the westbound off-ramp to Lake Washington Boulevard and a single lane of the eastbound off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard.
  • Marine traffic will be restricted. There will be no Montlake Bridge openings for boats between 7 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday. The bridge’s south span will open for boats (with one hour’s advance notice) between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
  • The freeway transit stops along SR 520 in Montlake will remain open but local buses will be rerouted around the Montlake area during the weekend. Check the King County Metro alerts webpage to find out information on your bus route.
  • Bicycle and pedestrian access will remain open across the west side of the Montlake Bridge.
  • The Montlake Boulevard U-turn at East Hamlin Street will remain open for I-5 access.
  • Access to the Shelby-Hamlin neighborhood will remain open.

Montlake Unabridged Retrospective 2015

October 15, 2015 by gehrkenathalie 1 Comment

From late May to September’s end, the artists, musicians, and writers of Montlake offered our community their creative gifts. Sixteen artists, 6 musical acts, and 5 writers entertained us in downtown Montlake. Their artworks, performances, and presentations appeared in our Montlake Library and businesses (Café Lago, Edward Jones Investments, FUEL, Glam & Tonics Aveda, Mr. Johnson’s Antiques, the Montlake Bicycle Shop, and Traveler Montlake.) The events were generously supported by other businesses (Coven, the Montlake Boulevard Market, and Mont’s Market). All this was underwritten by your Montlake Community Club (MCC) and planned by its Arts & Culture committee. Count yourself lucky if you had the opportunity to enjoy any of these art shows, musical performances, or evenings with writers across the four months. Please, let your MCC Board know your thoughts.

Email the Montlake Community Club Board

Enjoy the retrospective slideshow below, composed of photos taken by Jonathan Phillips, the official Montlake Unabridged photographer.

Montlake Meditation/ Mindfulness Groups Resume

October 14, 2015 by MaryDavis Leave a Comment

Meditate-Seattle-logo

MeditateSeattle.com

Happy Fall season fellow Montlake residents! Meditate Seattle’s weekly Meditation/ Mindfulness Groups have resumed meeting in the Montlake studio. Participants spend ½ hour sitting silently and observing their breath, or silently repeating a simple sound. You do not need any experience to join, just arrive a few minutes early for instructions, and/or questions. You don’t even need to register or apply, just come to the studio on Thursdays at 9:30 AM or 6:30 PM. There is no cost to attend; this is offered as a community service.

There is now a bounty of research about the benefits of a regular meditation/ mindfulness practice. The studies show that both your physiology and your mental function improve, even after only a few sessions. There is even new research showing that meditation can affect your DNA to activate health genes, and deactivate inflammation genes.

If you are interested in the specific changes brought about by meditation, Meditate Seattle has produced a 15 minute video that describes all the benefits, and instructs you in the basics of meditation.

IMG_0637The studio is located behind the house at 2145 Boyer Ave East, corner of 18th E and Boyer E. Walk up the first driveway on 18th E to arrive at the studio.

Thursdays 9:30 AM and 6:30 PM

Travel Book Tips From Audrey: A Hit

October 9, 2015 by gehrkenathalie 1 Comment

IMG_1129Audrey Weitkamp brought her trove of travel memory books and her useful tips for self-publishing to a Montlake Library audience Monday evening, Sept 28. A successful free-lance author and long-time Montlake resident, Audrey talked about how she turned her writing knowledge toward authoring accounts of travels to all parts of the globe with husband, Bill Weitkamp. Her audience appreciated seeing examples of her travel books, from the earliest using glued-in photos by Bill and simple Word-based documents, to the most recent taking advantage of on-line publishing programs (and Bill’s continuing photographic skills). Audrey offered her listeners encouragement to give memory book creation a try, whether for travel accounts or important special occasions, or family histories. Let’s see how many of them follow her example and show off their products to family and friends in the coming years. Or maybe they’ll share them here on the Flyer–beginning with Audrey.

Montlakers were welcomed to the evening program by Yvonne Nguyen Werner, Montlake Community Club Board Member, and Kathyrn Jennings, Montlake Librarian, representing the two sponsoring organizations. This engaging program concluded the summer 2015 Montlake Unabridged writer series, and was photographed by Jonathan Phillips. (See selected photos in the slideshow below.)
