Montlake Unabridged Retrospective 2015

October 15, 2015 by gehrkenathalie 1 Comment

From late May to September’s end, the artists, musicians, and writers of Montlake offered our community their creative gifts. Sixteen artists, 6 musical acts, and 5 writers entertained us in downtown Montlake. Their artworks, performances, and presentations appeared in our Montlake Library and businesses (Café Lago, Edward Jones Investments, FUEL, Glam & Tonics Aveda, Mr. Johnson’s Antiques, the Montlake Bicycle Shop, and Traveler Montlake.) The events were generously supported by other businesses (Coven, the Montlake Boulevard Market, and Mont’s Market). All this was underwritten by your Montlake Community Club (MCC) and planned by its Arts & Culture committee. Count yourself lucky if you had the opportunity to enjoy any of these art shows, musical performances, or evenings with writers across the four months. Please, let your MCC Board know your thoughts.

Hotel Montlake – Neighbor Shares Parody In Response to Traffic Issues

August 26, 2015 by montlake 3 Comments

trafficIn response to the traffic plaguing drivers, cyclists & pedestrians traveling thru Montlake, neighbor, Eddie Speer shared lyrics for an Eagles parody called “Hotel Montlake”.  You may find yourself singing this as you wait to leave Montlake, if you can….

On a dark floating highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of cement trucks, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a trail of red lights
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I encountered a frightening sight…

The traffic was stopped in the roadway;
I heard a driver curse and yell
And I was thinking to myself,
“This sure ain’t Heaven and it appears to be Hell”
Then a short detour appeared, and showed me the way
There were voices running through my head,
I thought I heard them say…

CHORUS:
Welcome to the Montlake Intercluster
Such a lovely park (such a lovely park)
Just don’t try to park
Plenty of cars at the Montlake Intercluster
Any time of day (Any time of day)
This is what they say….

The road is Tiffany-twisted, I saw a Mercedes Benz
There are a lot of pretty, pretty SUVs, packed end-to-end
How the trucks belch their diesel, sweet summer smoke
As I read the “best management practices”, is this some kind of joke?

So I called up the schedule,
And asked “Please explain this line..”
They said, “We haven’t met a milestone here since Nineteen sixty nine”
And still those jack-hammers call from right next door,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
As if you were asking for more…

Welcome to the Montlake Intercluster
Such a lovely park (such a lovely park)
Just don’t try to park
We’re livin’ it up at the Montlake Intercluster
Get used to being late (used to being late)
It’s our collective fate….

The back seat starts to lose it
A tantrum to be more precise
And I said “We are all just prisoners here, of our own device”
And on the freeway off-ramp,
They gathered for the wait
They exit their cars just to stretch their legs,
And they just can’t believe this State

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
“Relax, ” said the bridge tender,
“We are programmed to receive.
You can start your engine any time you like,
But you can never leave! “

Holiday Elves Return to Montlake

December 1, 2014 by montlake Leave a Comment

December 2014 Montlake Playfield Tree

December 2014 Montlake Playfield Tree

After hearing reports of activity in Montlake playfield last night,  we investigated this afternoon and found the lone tree near the Bill Dawson trail had once again been sprinkled with holiday cheer. This year it appears the elves may have had some assistance or a taller ladder as a golden star rests at the top of the tree.

Happy Holidays!

WABN Op-Ed: The Short Answer Is NO

April 24, 2014 by Art 2 Comments

WABN-10apr14-e

THE MEETING – 10 APRIL, 2014 – WABN Construction Update

Some people had a meeting just the other night,

at the Queen City Yacht Club with a WSDOT invite.

WSDOT’s people paid a visit, their panel fronted the room

to inform us about WABN which would be happening soon.

A mayor’s office representative sat far in the back

and waved when introduced but never said jack.

People from distant neighborhoods were plentiful there

and a man from Roanoke was the meeting’s acting chair.

The chairman was polite with well-prepared questions

all carefully worded to avoid any hint of contention.

The chair’s polite questions were vaguely answered by WSDOT

and those ambiguous answers caused the audience to get hot.

Many folks were just there because they were curious

while a few of our neighbors almost sounded furious.

When the time came to give the audience their turn,

the hands flew in the air – they were starting to burn!

THE DISCUSSION

The first public comment came from Madison Park.

A man stood and said this WSDOT plan is too stark.

He had tried working that plan for now seventeen years;

seems this WSDOT fiasco had nearly brought him to tears.

Then the audience helped him out with loud applause and cheers!

Though most of the speakers were cool and polite,

the audience mood was hardly contrite.

Both S DOT and WS DOT did their own traffic studies

but, our analysis has shown their results are too muddy.

So intentionally focused at just the traffic ‘on-shore’,

they’ve ignored the real reasons that the neighbors deplore,

reasons that keep the neighbors from getting to the store.

Then a man from Montlake stood and pointed out the fatal flaws

in WSDOT’s traffic study, to more loud audience applause.

That study’s missed out the Arboretum’s five thousand cars;

WSDOT didn’t answer  – perhaps the cars are on Mars.

Next a lady from Laurelhurst complained about the long time

driving from her home neighborhood waiting in traffic lines,

all the way through Montlake full of traffic lights and stop signs,

she said her trip downtown in minutes takes about forty-nine.

A second man from Montlake stood up, then he rambled,

though his thoughts were pertinent they were a bit scrambled.

When the chair finally asked is there a question in there,

man two paused – but before sitting back in his chair –

he held up the evening handout, WSDOT’s March newsletter,

and asked ‘Why is this intentionally misleading information in there’?

What was in that newsletter that excited the man so?

It was this one simple question to be answered yes or no:

Will there be traffic impacts when WABN lets go?

And to their own question, WSDOT’s short answer was no.

More audience applause then helped Montlake man two to his chair.

THE REAL PROBLEM

University Village keeps adding more and more parking,

and at the car-intense U dub only the huskies are barking.

As for the drawbridge that flies open for just one solitary boat,

stopping hundreds of cars from crossing our own Montlake moat,

fixing that outdated maritime law is our neighbor’s big hope.

It’s a big Montlake deal to which all our politicians say nope.

THE ENDING

WS DOT responded weakly to most questions from the audience,

as though they would have preferred to just sit there in silence.

When their talking points got repetitive people started looking bored

and before too much longer we all headed for the door

So, did the neighborhood appreciate WSDOT’s evening PR show?

If I could speak for the neighbors, I’d say the short answer was NO!

Hot Holiday Gift For Montlakers: Cat Leashes

December 6, 2013 by BryanHaworth 3 Comments

Cat-on-a-leash1

The next time you see your neighbor walking their cat you just might notice something different — the cat will likely be wearing a leash. The cat leash craze has become the latest fad to sweep trendy Montlake. A spokesperson from one local market said “cat leashes are our hottest selling item; they are flying off the shelves.” Another local store reported Black Friday shoppers were waiting outside for hours and then rushed in grabbing handfuls of cat leashes in a wild frenzy.

At a press conference last week, the mayor praised Montlake saying, “this is a new day; Montlake has finally shown us how cat leashes can have a positive impact on our lives; birds, rats, and very small chickens can finally live without fear or threat.” Yesterday, caving to pressure from the “Cats are People Too Coalition,” the council held an emergency session and passed a resolution encouraging dog owners to share off leash parks with cats because “it could really be something to watch.” One local cat owner said, “my cat loves his new leash, just yesterday I was able to drag him all the way to U Village and back.” The cat was not available for comment.

Happy Holidays!
