Senior Services, through the Aging Your Way Initiative, presents “Community Connections: Moving from I to We” on Thursday, June 26 at South Seattle College. The purpose of the conference is to inspire, motivate and provide opportunities for people who want to connect with others to build interdependent communities that are good to grow up and grow older in. Jim Diers, well known for his work in community engagement and the former director of Seattle’s Department of Neighborhoods, will facilitate a lively, interactive day filled with engagement and opportunities to get involved.
Aging Your Way is an initiative launched by Senior Services in 2009, including outreach to King County Baby Boomers in 2010 and 2011. In a recent speech, Nancy LeaMond, AARP Executive Vice President, said, “On January 1, 1946, the first of 78 million baby boomers was born … and on January 2011, those boomers began turning 65 — representing the most significant demographic shift in our nation’s history. Every seven seconds, someone turns 50 … 12,500 people every day. By 2030, one in three Americans will be over the age of 50 — and the 65-plus population will double to 72 million.”
