Grebe’s feet are attached at the tail-end of their bodies, for under water propulsion. This makes them very awkward when not swimming. The young birds in the nest repeatedly fell over on their backs, while just trying to reach the other side of the nest. It would have been faster to jump in the water and swim around. A junco is a common bird. It seldom gets a second glance, if we notice it at all. When we take a closer look we start to see what makes all life on this little planet special, unique and beautiful in its own right. I hope you enjoy the post on:

This sleepy looking little bird is surprisingly good at disappearing. They live and reproduce all around us. They can be seen in both the Arboretum and Interlaken Park, if we look closely. In fact this particular bird is building a nest in the Arboretum. You can test you powers of observation and learn about the nesting process in this week’s post.

This week’s post focuses on the cutest little owl I have ever seen. I must admit the photographs were not taken around Union Bay, however I think once you see the photos you will understand why I made an exception. While this little owl is cute, it is also a predator.

If you were in the Montlake area just after 4 p.m. on Tuesday you no doubt saw the flash, heard the thunder and felt the impact when lightning hit in the Arboretum. Luckily, the destructive force focused on a tall Grand Fir tree, instead of one of our homes. See the photos and read the story on:
