The Hidden lives of Herons

April 7, 2019 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

This week’s post contrasts the early-season nesting behavior of our local Great Blue Herons with our Bald Eagles. Hopefully, my photos and descriptions help to shed some light on these somewhat obscure avian activities.  These were first time observations for me. More at:

Making Memories

February 18, 2017 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

354A5544Whenever eagles call it all sounds about the same to me. However, this week when Eva told Albert it was time to pay attention – his response was obvious and immediate. Maybe it is not what she says but how she says it. Clearly, it is all still a mystery to me. See more on:

EB2R9273Mating and nest building are highly intertwined in the lives of cooper’s hawks. Last week we focused on nest building. This week, we look from the female’s point of view, at the other half of the process. For mature audiences only (not really). See more at:

Even on a cold winter’s day bushtits exude happiness. They clearly value being part of a community. (Have you ever seen them having a disagreement?) They remind me of the phrase, “Make love, not war!” I hope you enjoy this post:
