Surround Sound | Union Bay Watch

August 9, 2015 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

354A8922When the swallows surround you on Union Bay or Foster Island the motions and sounds can be mesmerizing. In the summer we have 5 different types of swallows before they head south for the winter. One of the most common and unique is the barn swallow. They migrate the farthest, all the way to South America. After feeding what do you think is their second most common activity? Find out in this week’s post on:

Masters of Deception | Union Bay Watch

April 16, 2015 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

EB2R0564This sleepy looking little bird is surprisingly good at disappearing. They live and reproduce all around us. They can be seen in both the Arboretum and Interlaken Park, if we look closely. In fact this particular bird is building a nest in the Arboretum. You can test you powers of observation and learn about the nesting process in this week’s post.

Please visit: Union Bay Watch

Have a great day near Union Bay…where the masters of deception practice their disappearing act!

The Mating Game | Union Bay Watch

March 28, 2015 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

EB2R9273Mating and nest building are highly intertwined in the lives of cooper’s hawks. Last week we focused on nest building. This week, we look from the female’s point of view, at the other half of the process. For mature audiences only (not really). See more at:

Discriminating Taste | Union Bay Watch

January 11, 2015 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

EB2R9535This week’s post focuses on Varied Thrush and their very selective food preferences. You might even say they are a bit “picky”. It is funny when you look at their tongues they do not look at all like ours so it makes me wonder if they even have taste buds. Somehow they definitely have preferences about their food. You can learn more and see the photos on:

2014 – One Last Look | Union Bay Watch

Elvis - A Male Pileated Woodpecker

Elvis – Our Male Pileated Woodpecker

This week’s post takes one last look back at the birds we have watched around Union Bay in 2014. The focus is on knowing which birds live here year round, which come here for the summer and which are winter visitors. It seems a bit odd that Union Bay can be both a winter and summer destination. Each birds ability to enjoy our little portion of the planet depends on their particular set of skills and attributes. If you would like one last look at the birds of 2014 click on: Union Bay Watch
