Three international crews will travel to Seattle for the event. The UW women, who won the NCAA championship last year, will take on the Dutch National Team, while the UW men will compete against the reigning collegiate champions from Great Britain (Oxford Brookes University) and Canada (University of British Columbia).
“This year’s Windermere Cup is like the World Series of rowing,” said Windermere president, OB Jacobi. “You have the number one collegiate teams in Great Britain and Canada competing against the national powerhouse UW men. Equally exciting is the matchup between the Dutch women’s national team, one of the top women’s rowing crews in the world, and the national champs UW women. Show the Arboretum Some Love on Earth Day!
Looking for fun, local way to give back to the planet this Earth Day? Then look no farther than your Arboretum!
This Saturday (April 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), the Arboretum is co-hosting its annual Earth Day work-service event with the Student Conservation Association to help restore the park. All are welcome to participate!
Meet at Crabapple Meadow, just south of the Graham Visitors Center, at 9 a.m. Enjoy free coffee and breakfast snacks. Then spend the morning helping staff gardeners spread mulch, pull invasive weeds, and maintain trails all around the Arboretum.
When the work is done, head back to the meadow for an after-party featuring music, giveaways, and a hot dog vendor.
“We are trying to get people outside this Earth Day to show the park some love,” says Arboretum Foundation Volunteer Programs Manager Alyssa Henry. “The Arboretum is full of community—we’ve got gardeners, students, birders, walkers, plant nerds, dog walkers, neighbors, kids, sun seekers, and more. What better way to bring them all together than to share time in the caring for this amazing and one-of-a-kind place!”
Got small kids? No worries: the Arboretum’s got you covered.
“New for this year’s event is the children’s work site,” says Henry. “We want kids to feel comfortable being outside and also offer them a chance to do their part. The work site will be close to the registration desk on Crabapple Meadow, and—with their caregivers supervising—the kids will have fun pulling up invasive ivy and buttercups. Every pulled weed helps—no matter what the size!”
“The after-party is also new this year,” continues Henry. “The Movin 92.5 music van will be here, cranking out tunes for the volunteers! And lots of great companies have stepped up to help us with refreshments and giveaways. They want to support the effort and help remind folks that the Arboretum is worth the work.”
To find out more or sign up for the event, visit the Arboretum Foundation’s website at arboretumfoundation.org/events/earth-day-arboretum.
