The Hidden lives of Herons

April 7, 2019 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

This week’s post contrasts the early-season nesting behavior of our local Great Blue Herons with our Bald Eagles. Hopefully, my photos and descriptions help to shed some light on these somewhat obscure avian activities.  These were first time observations for me. More at:

The Un-Snipe

September 17, 2016 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

eb2r6717On Wednesday, I mistook this bird for a snipe. Do you know what it really is? If not, you can find out on:

Union Bay Watch

You can also learn the details of a standoff between three osprey and a great blue heron.

Have a great day on Union Bay…where the un-snipe visit the city!

Illuminated

August 6, 2016 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

EB2R1343On Thursday morning just before dawn I went searching for subjects to photograph. Ultimately, the sunshine and I found this great blue heron. This week’s post is about the creatures and thoughts we found along the way. See the photos on:

Choosing Wisely

June 10, 2016 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

EB2R7945-2How is one great blue heron nest different from the others? What will be the impact to these three young birds? Will they survive their parent’s choice? Will they survive their nest mates? Some of these questions get answered in this week’s post on:

Dreams of Spring

February 13, 2016 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

EB2R0396It is impossible to know what a heron dreams. It might be frogs and fish or it could be wishing for the warmer weather and sunshine of Spring. The dreams and signs of Spring are all around us. Bundle up and step outside to see them or if you are pressed for time just visit:

Out of The Mist | Union Bay Watch

October 26, 2014 by Larry Hubbell Leave a Comment

EB2R6322This week’s post on Union Bay Watch has to do with a Great Egret and especially the actions of Great Blue Herons. These particular birds were spotted in Vancouver, Wa while visiting family, none the less their behavior seems to show how all life on earth is closely related. See the photos at:
