Seattle Design Commissioner sought

Mayor Mike McGinn is looking for a new Seattle Design Commission member to fill the licensed engineer position. A transportation engineer is preferred. The term will start on March 1, 2011 and extend through February 2013, with the possibility of renewing for another two year term.

Design Commission members are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council for renewable, two‐year terms. The ten member commission is made up of architects, artists, urban designers, environmental designers, urban planners, landscape architects, engineers, members‐at‐large, and one member from Get Engaged, the YMCA Young Civic Leaders Program.

Established in 1968, the Seattle Design Commission advises city officials on the design and environmental effects of capital improvement projects. Members also help select consultants for City projects. The Commission meets all day on the first and third Thursdays of each month. In addition, members serve on project subcommittees and represent the commission on other advisory boards. Members work an average of 20 to 25 hours a month. Members cannot contract with the city on any capital improvement project reviewed by the commission.

Boyer Children’s Clinic Announces South Seattle Satellite

Boyer Children’s Clinic is pleased to announce the opening of a new south Seattle therapy facility located at the Seattle Children’s PlayGarden at Coleman Field in the Rainier Valley.

The new space will allow Boyer to expand its capacity to serve up to 10% more children a year by offering additional occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech/language therapy services at the site. Boyer therapists began meeting with clients in the new space on January 3, 2011.

Boyer and its Board of Directors decided to open the satellite in response to studies Boyer conducted showing a large number of underserved children living in south Seattle.  Over the last five years, Boyer has conducted studies comparing the incidences of developmental delay in the community and the number of children receiving services and determined as many as 50% of the eligible children in some areas in the south end of Seattle are not being referred to Boyer for services.

In response to this information, Boyer began increased outreach efforts in the communities in south Seattle.  Those efforts paid off, bringing a 20% increase in the number of children served to the clinic annually in 2007 and 2008.  In 2010, Boyer continues to set records for the number of children served and the number of therapy hours delivered.  “We are near to the capacity we can serve at our Montlake site, so it makes sense to open a site that is closer to many who we already serve and who will need our services in the future,” said Executive Director Michael Stewart.

The PlayGarden site will improve accessibility for families living in the surrounding neighborhoods and provide a warm, park-like environment for Boyer clients to receive their therapy services.  Boyer staff will rent 600 square feet from the PlayGarden and will have access to the outside play areas, which have been designed specifically to accomodate children of all ages and abilities.

“It’s an extremely family friendly environment and we’re very happy to be able to bring Boyer families there for services.  We’re grateful to PlayGarden Executive Director Liz Bullard and the PlayGarden Board of Directors for working with us to make this satellite possible,” said Stewart.

Boyer will evaluate the new site’s effectiveness based upon the usage made by the site by current and new families, the connections the location helps Boyer build with the surrounding community, and the impact seen on the rates of referrals for children in the south end.

MCC November Meeting Cancelled

Due to the Veterans’ Day holiday, the November general meeting of the Montlake Community Club has been cancelled.  The next general meeting will be on Thursday, January 13th at 7:00 p.m. at the Montlake Community Center (1618 E. Calhoun Street).

The MCC Board will meet on Thursday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m. as scheduled, also at the Montlake Community Center.  Members of the Montlake Community Club are welcome to attend the Board meetings.

Bioblitz: The Fungus Among Us

What: The biggest and best bulb sale in the region

It‘s bulb-planting season, and area gardeners will be flocking to the Arboretum Foundation‘s annual Fall Bulb & Plant Sale, which features the best selection of spring-blooming bulbs in the Puget Sound region. The sale takes place on October 3 and 4 at beautiful Washington Park Arboretum. Hundreds of varieties of daffodils, tulips, crocuses, cyclamen, and much more will be available. Companion plants: Need shrubs, ferns, or perennials for your garden or to complement your bulbs? Several of the region‘s top specialty nurseries will be present at the Sunday event selling choice companion plants. What‘s more, the Arboretum‘s Pat Calvert Greenhouse and Plant Donations Nursery will be open throughout the event, and will be selling a wide array of herbaceous and woody plants. Volunteers from the greenhouse will be present on each of the sale days to help you with your plant selections. Donations volunteers will be on-hand for the Sunday sale and Saturday Member Pre-Sale.

Member Pre-Sale: Arboretum Foundation members may shop early at the Member Pre-sale, Saturday, October 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Not a member? No sweat! Just join at the door and enjoy first pick of the bulbs at the Sale!

Bonsai Bonanza: As a special feature this year, we will be selling a collection of bonsai trees donated to the Arboretum by a generous member of the Foundation. It‘s a marvelous collection of 20 trees of varying ages and sizes, including conifers, broadleaf species, and bamboo. See our full-color, illustrated bonsai catalog for descriptions and prices.

Seasonal tours and kids’ activities: Also new this year at the Sunday sale will be a kids‘ table hosted by educators from the University of Washington Botanic Gardens. Parents and kids can take a break from shopping and enjoy free, fall-themed educational activities, such as creating leaf rubbings and using pressed leaves to make cards. In addition, the UWBG‘s knowledgeable garden guides will lead free seasonal tours of the Arboretum on Sunday, October 3, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The morning tour will showcase the fall foliage of the Japanese maples in the Arboretum.

Montlake and the National Historic Preservation Act

Jon Decker and Dick Dunn are hosting a meeting to inform and engage the community with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. They will first explain the 106 process to those of you who are unfamiliar with it. Then we will break out into smaller groups to address specific areas of Montlake that are potentially affected by either the construction of the 520 Bridge or the final design. During this process you will be able to suggest mitigation for the affected properties. This will be our second meeting and it was clear to me after listening to the input at our first meeting that the creative ideas and comments come from neighbors who live, commute and work in Montlake.

Montlake, more than any neighborhood will suffer impacts from not only the construction but the final bridge design. Jon has worked for years with his committee to provide us with this final opportunity to comment on adverse effects and be heard. I urge you to attend this meeting on Tuesday, October 12th in the Tudor Room at the Montlake Community Center at 7:00pm.
