Join the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) at an upcoming open house to learn about the Transit Master Plan (TMP), share your feedback, and see where we’re going from here.

The TMP is a 20-year vision for transit in Seattle. SDOT recently released the draft report, available at http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/transitmasterplan.htm.

Open house dates and locations:

  • Oct 18 @ Seattle Vocational Institute (2120 S Jackson St)

  • Nov 15 @ Ballard High School (1418 NW 65th St)
  • Nov 17 @ New Holly Gathering Hall (7054 32nd Ave S)

All open houses will run from 6 – 8pm and will begin with a brief presentation and overview. You’ll then have a chance to walk around and view project boards, talk to staff, ask questions, and provide comments.

Each meeting will cover the same information, so feel free to attend any/all. More details (room numbers, how to get there) can be found at http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/tmp_outreach.htm.

Please distribute far and wide. You can also download an event poster from the outreach page listed above.

You’re Invited: South Portage Bay Habitat Dedication, Oct. 6th

September 25, 2011 by webmaster Leave a Comment

The South Portage Bay Habitat, located where 15th Avenue East dead-ends into the Portage Bay wetlands, is now complete. The park will have a dedication ceremony on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 3:00 pm. All Montlake neighbors are invited to attend. The last addition to this wonderful pocket park is several large boulders showing the artwork of Barbara Earl Thomas. The stones depict crows, one of the many bird species that inhabit our neighborhood parks.

The habitat is connected to the Montlake Community Center grounds on the west edge of the parking lot. A trail travels through the wetlands to 15th Avenue East and the entrance to the habitat.

A fleet of neighborhood workers have transformed this former blackberry vine-covered lot into a scenic spot for the neighborhood to enjoy.

With the help of grants from the city and a huge amount of sweat and time from numerous helpers, there is now a trail to the water, native plantings, a small patch of lawn and a bench.

There is hardly a blackberry bush in sight. The habitat provides a view of Portage Bay that is scenic and changes with the seasons.

I find it quite calming to sit and watch the water, boats, water lilies, ducks and other birds and know that I‟m a long way from the traffic congestion on the 520 viaduct over head.

Montlake residents owe a huge THANK YOU to all the workers who have donated their time and effort to bring us this nice addition to our neighborhood.

“Families – YES!” Seeks Montlake Support

September 25, 2011 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Seattle’s Families and Education Levy provides out-of-school activities, pre-school support, physical and mental health services, academic support and interventions, and supports parent and family engagement for tens of thousands of Seattle children and families. Seattle voters passed the first seven-year levy in November 1990, and the current levy will expire in December 2011 unless renewed by voters in this year’s general election.

“Families – YES!” is a coalition of people and groups supporting the levy, and is asking the Montlake Community Club to endorse the levy at our October 12th meeting. (The Montlake Community Club can endorse or oppose ballot measures without affecting our non-profit status.)

Art and Design Classes at UW Botanic Gardens

August 29, 2011 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Beginning Botanical Watercolor Class

Instructor: Kathleen McKeehen, Botanical Artist and Instructor
Learn the basics of classical botanical watercolor painting, which will include techniques in measurement, drawing, and understanding how light reveals form, along with practice in color mixing.  The application of controlled washes and dry-brush technique will contribute further, producing an image that is three-dimensional, accurate, and aesthetically appealing–the goal of botanical painting–and equally effective in painting other subjects realistically.  Beginners are welcome, and students with previous instruction can take on new subjects under supervision.  A list of supplies will be provided with registration.

5-part class:  9/28 – 10/26 from 7 – 9:30 pm
Fee: $170 Early Bird Discount; $190 after September 16
Register online: http://depts.washington.edu/uwbg

Landscape Design Series

Design your own landscape guided by Nancy Tom, a licensed, bonded and insured Environmental Horticulturist. See her web site for projects and planting ideas: downtoearthgardens.com.

In six weeks we will learn how to: develop a site analysis, measure, site a house on a plan, draw to scale, design workable hardscaping, consider color and texture, choose plants that are suitable for your soil, microclimate and home, lighting, drainage, trellises and arbor.

This is a six week series, with lectures and time to work in-class.
September 8-27, 7-9:30 pm. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Fee: $175 Early Bird Discount; $190 after September 1, 2011

Plein Air Field Sketching

Instructor:  Suzanne Ferris
Everyone can learn from what exists in nature and apply these lessons to their own garden designs, travel sketchbooks or works of art. All skill levels are welcome.

The class will start inside drawing simple cones, cylinders, and spheres and getting used to handling the materials then move outside to discover these same shapes in trees and shrubs. We will be field sketching in sumi and walnut ink as well as soft graphite.  The instructor will demonstrate how to draw abstract shapes rather than specific specimens in the landscape and translate these shapes into a formal composition where “value veils” help create depth on the paper.  We will return to the classroom to discuss one and two point perspective, point of view, and the process of seeing by mark making. A list of supplies will be provided with registration.

Saturday September 24, 10 am – 5 pm
Fee: $75 Early Bird Discount; $85 after September 12
