This week’s post takes one last look back at the birds we have watched around Union Bay in 2014. The focus is on knowing which birds live here year round, which come here for the summer and which are winter visitors. It seems a bit odd that Union Bay can be both a winter and summer destination. Each birds ability to enjoy our little portion of the planet depends on their particular set of skills and attributes. If you would like one last look at the birds of 2014 click on: Union Bay Watch

Golden Gifts | Union Bay Watch
Earlier this week, a couple of male, golden-crowned kinglets came down from the treetops to search for food at my eye level. The opportunity to view their raised orange crests, in the middle of their golden yellow crowns, felt like a gift. Have you ever compared the differences between the male and female golden-crowned kinglets? How about the difference between a golden-crowned and a ruby-crowned kinglet? See the photos on:

Out of the Arctic | Union Bay Watch
This elegant bird breeds in the Arctic, feeds in underwater and spends most of its life at sea. It visited Union Bay for a couple of days this week and could be seen just north of Marsh Island. There are also other birds from the Arctic and a Bald Eagle with its Thanksgiving dinner. See the photos on Union Bay Watch.
Winter’s Cache | Union Bay Watch
The Nuthatch defies the power of gravity while demonstrating a memory that puts me to shame. That is a lot of ability for a little bird that weighs less than a good steak. Read the story and see more photos at:

From Green-winged Teals to Mallards, Northern Shovelers, Buffleheads and Gadwalls the birds are preparing for courtship. Their feathers are all bright and new, there is plenty of preparatory preening and cleaning and lots of competition for a little love.
