New Bike Path Coming To Montlake

CANG_Website_MapSMLast month the Seattle Dept. of Transportation held an open house to show the public their plan for changes to the 23rd Avenue-24th Avenue corridor. This project will bring changes to 23rd Avenue starting at South Rainier Avenue and continuing to East Roanoke Street in the Montlake neighborhood.

There are 2 components to this project. Along 23rd and 24th, changes will be made to improve safety for pedestrians and cars. Sidewalks will be widened and smoothed for walkers, strollers and wheelchairs. From Rainier Ave. to East John Street, the lanes will be changed to one lane in each direction with a left turn lane in the middle. Street parking will continue.

The second component will be a designated “greenway” for pedestrians and bikers who do not want to ride or walk on arterials with heavier and faster traffic. The greenway will be on a residential street parallel to the arterial. The greenway streets will have sidewalk improvements to smooth and widen the path for walkers and young bikers. The street pavement will be painted with a bike lane and crosswalks where the greenway crosses arterials.

In Montlake, the greenway will begin at Roanoke Street and 22nd Ave. East. It will head south to Lynn St. and continue on 23rd Ave to Boyer Ave. A new crosswalk will be placed at Boyer and Howe St. so walkers can safely cross Boyer. A wider bike-friendly pathway will be installed between Boyer and Interlaken Blvd at Howe St. replacing the current steps that currently allow walkers to enter Interlaken Park.

At this intersection greenway uses can choose between 2 routes to get up the hill to Galer St on Capitol Hill. One route is Interlaken Blvd which has the gentler grade. But it is longer, has no sidewalks and is not well-lit at night. The second route is more direct and has sidewalks and lighting but is quite steep:  22nd Ave. to Peach Court to Crescent Drive.

The project will begin construction this fall with Phase I which is the corridor from Jackson St. to East John. Montlake is in Phase III which will be the last part completed, hopefully by the end of 2015.

Obliteride Rolls Through Montlake on Sunday

MontlakeMontlake is going orange for Obliteride – to help Fred Hutch end cancer.

Have you noticed the bright orange signs in our neighborhood alerting folks that participants in the 2nd annual fundraising bike ride for Fred Hutch will be riding through Montlake on Sunday, August 10th?

It’s supposed to be a beautiful weekend, so come outside and cheer the riders on. A fun event for neighbors, families and kids to do. You can make signs (Welcome to Montlake!), cheer, ring cowbells, –  just like the Tour De France!

The route goes from Magnuson Park to the University Bridge, Fuhrman, to Boyer to 26th to 28th and then to Madison Valley en route to Seward Park, and then back through Montlake on the same streets.

    • 7:45 am – 11:30 am (in larger groups) based on staggered starts of 100, 50, 25 mile routes from Magnuson Park.
    • 12:00 pm-7:00 pm Return of all routes. (spread out, will look like a normal Sunday of cyclists traffic)

With 100% of every dollar raised benefitting lifesaving cancer research at Fred Hutch, four great bicycling options and a community of people that cares fiercely about ending cancer, it’s a buzz from the kickoff party Friday evening at Gas Works Park to the closing festivities Sunday at Magnuson Park.

There is s still time to sign up to ride. Obliteride offers four routes ranging from 25 to 150 miles, so everyone from beginning riders to experienced cyclists can participate. Register to ride at Obliteride.org.

SDOT Transit Master Plan – Open House

Join the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) at an upcoming open house to learn about the Transit Master Plan (TMP), share your feedback, and see where we’re going from here.

The TMP is a 20-year vision for transit in Seattle. SDOT recently released the draft report, available at http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/transitmasterplan.htm.

Open house dates and locations:

  • Oct 18 @ Seattle Vocational Institute (2120 S Jackson St)
  • Oct 25 @ Aljoya Thornton Creek (450 NE 100th St)
  • Oct 26 @ West Seattle Eagles Hall (4426 California Ave SW)
  • Nov 15 @ Ballard High School (1418 NW 65th St)
  • Nov 17 @ New Holly Gathering Hall (7054 32nd Ave S)

All open houses will run from 6 – 8pm and will begin with a brief presentation and overview. You’ll then have a chance to walk around and view project boards, talk to staff, ask questions, and provide comments.

Mayor McGinn at Husky Cycling Club on Oct. 15

Mayor of Seattle Mike McGinn will be visiting Husky Cycling in front of the IMA on Montlake at 9:30am for a brief presentation and meet-and-greet with riders. There will be up to 100 UW students, staff, and faculty cyclists, as well as friends of the club and other members of the cycling community, present for the mayor’s visit.
